Basbousa Cake

Originated from the ancient land of Egypt, Basbousa is a classic cake from the times of the Ottoman Empire. It is a delightful dessert made from Rawa, with the sweetness of sugar blended with the juicy sourness of lemon. It’s a simple recipe to bring to your home the relished taste of Middle Eastern, Greek, Turkish, Ethiopian & Yemeni cuisines.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Gajraj Royale Kesari Rawa fine
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp Baking powder
  • 1 cup Whisked curd
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1/2 cup Melted butter
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla
  • 1/2 cup Butter
  • Flour for dusting
  • Almond slices for garnish
  • Sugar syrup:
  • 1 cup water
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp Rose water
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
Method
  • Take Gajraj Royale Kesari Rawa, sugar, and baking powder. Mix well
  • Add curd, 1/2 cup milk, and 1/2 cup butter to it and whisk well
  • Add vanilla and mix well
  • Rest for 5 minutes
  • Grease tin with butter and dust flour
  • Add batter to the cake tin
  • Pre-heat the oven for 15 minutes at 180 degrees
  • Bake at 180 degrees for 45 min-1 hour
  • Make sugar syrup and bring it to room temp
  • Once the cake is out, pour the syrup and leave for an hour
  • De-mould and garnish with almonds
